Common Reasons for a Pet Ultrasound

Pet ultrasounds can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions in a pet. A dog ultrasound may be used to diagnose pregnancy. However, cardiac ultrasounds and abdominal ultrasounds for pets can be used to monitor the state of tumors and cysts, evaluate heart conditions and identify abdominal organ changes.

Pet ultrasounds give detailed information on the health of soft tissue structures, including muscle, organs, and blood vessels. A pet may have injured themselves when swallowing a foreign object or have pregnancy difficulties. An ultrasound for a cat or dog will provide necessary details for an accurate diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes. Pets and pet owners benefit from this painless procedure.

Most pets are quite comfortable during the ultrasound process. A light sedation may be recommended for pets showing signs of anxiety or distress. Most pets do very well without sedation. The safe diagnostic tool offers high-quality imaging of the internal structures of an affected area. Speak with our veterinarian at Animal Hospital of Sullivan in Ferndale, New York for more details on prepping a pet for an ultrasound appointment.

What to Expect from a Pet Ultrasound Session

What should pet owners know about having their pet receive a pet ultrasound? The majority of pets lay comfortably on their side while being scanned. Anxious or stressed pets may receive a mild sedative. A pet ultrasound does not generally require the use of anesthesia. This real time process allows for immediate reviewing of results.

For high-quality imaging, it is important to shave the fur of the area where an ultrasound probe will make contact with the skin of a pet. Our vets need the probe to make full contact. A pregnancy diagnosis may be an exception. In most cases, shaving off fur permits the taking of quality images by the pet ultrasound machine and veterinarian.

Testimonial

Dr. Barbara Bodolosky is a very talented and professional veterinarian and we chose her to be our vet for our new rescue pup, Sweetie. We are lifelong residents of Sullivan County and have had many vets treating our pets over the years. We picked Dr. B because we had read many glowing and thankful reviews on various websites and noted that her practice is listed as #2 in the Top Ten Vets in Sullivan County. We were instantly drawn to her warm, calm, caring and practice approach to animal care which is also evident in her interaction with us on each visit. Dr. B is willing to spend lots of time with us as we learn about our newest companion and discuss the best care and training for our wonderful, Sweetie – no question is too small. She has been practicing in Sullivan County since 2001 and caring for animals since 1993 after leaving the military. {Note: Recently friends of ours needed to have a very large fishhook removed from their toy Yorkie’s stomach and they report that Dr. B provided instant help and was a skillful surgeon – all went well. Another friend of ours told us that several groomers had tried and failed to clip her Shih Tzu’s nails due to his crazed behavior and his painfully long nails were now impacting his gait – Dr. B and her team accomplished this taking 45 slow and gentle minutes and only charging $16} All of her office staff are friendly and always helpful – happy to meet and greet your pets too. It should also be noted that the practice is bright and clean and modern – even the grounds are kept immaculately and are free of any “messes”! Animal Hospital of Sullivan County is open most days until 5 or 6 pm and offers on-call emergency services 7 days a week from 7:30am to 9pm. They also board pets and maintain the only local crematorium if such services are ever needed. (Dr. B had been most kind and beyond supportive when we were faced with the illness and eventual loss of our beloved dog after 18 years of being a most important member of our family.) We cannot recommend Dr. B more highly and we thank her for her service and care.
