Senior Pet Care in Sullivan County

As your dog or cat ages, their veterinary needs begin to change. They may need to see our veterinarian at the Animal Hospital of Sullivan County for senior pet care as a result. Here are some things to consider when determining whether or not your furry friend might need senior pet care.

Do You Have A Senior Pet?

Depending on the type of pet you have, they may become a senior pet earlier or later in life. A cat becomes a senior cat once they turn nine years old. A dog becomes a senior dog at the same age if they’re a smaller breed. If they’re a bigger breed, they become a senior once they turn six years old.

For a cat, seven years old is the same as 45 human years. For dogs, that can be anywhere between 44 and 56 years. At that age, a human is bordering on becoming a senior themselves. It makes sense that domestic pets have the same distinction.

Common Ailments for Senior Pets

In some cases, a pet may age and be as healthy as they were when they were a puppy or a kitten. In other instances, though, just like with humans, pets are susceptible to health issues as they get older. It’s at this point you should consider taking them to our veterinarian at the Animal Hospital of Sullivan County for senior care.

Older pets may develop:

  • Bone disease
  • Joint disease
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Thyroid disease
  • Kidney disease

With our preventative care and emergency surgery at the Animal Hospital of Sullivan County, we can care for your pet and cure what ails them.

Our preventative care consists of regular consultations. If your pet is experiencing any of the above medical issues or any other issues, this is the time to mention it to our Ferndale veterinarian. We’ll have follow-up appointments to make sure the issue is taken care of.

We also offer the most effective tick and flea prevention to prevent the transmission of vector-borne diseases, heartworm medication, preventative care exams, and a variety of vaccines, including those that protect against Lyme disease, Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, Rabies,  Influenza,  Kennel Cough and Leukemia.

If your pet does need surgery, we understand how this can be a scary time. With a trained and well-experienced veterinarian at the helm, you can feel confident that your pet is in the best hands possible at the Animal Hospital of Sullivan County.

Surgical procedures that we offer include gastrointestinal surgery, urinary tract surgery, internal surgery for tumors, skin lump removals, dental surgery, neutering, and spaying. We even do emergency surgery to treat deep cuts, bladder obstructions, and twisted digestive organs.

Testimonial

Dr. Barbara Bodolosky is a very talented and professional veterinarian and we chose her to be our vet for our new rescue pup, Sweetie. We are lifelong residents of Sullivan County and have had many vets treating our pets over the years. We picked Dr. B because we had read many glowing and thankful reviews on various websites and noted that her practice is listed as #2 in the Top Ten Vets in Sullivan County. We were instantly drawn to her warm, calm, caring and practice approach to animal care which is also evident in her interaction with us on each visit. Dr. B is willing to spend lots of time with us as we learn about our newest companion and discuss the best care and training for our wonderful, Sweetie – no question is too small. She has been practicing in Sullivan County since 2001 and caring for animals since 1993 after leaving the military. {Note: Recently friends of ours needed to have a very large fishhook removed from their toy Yorkie’s stomach and they report that Dr. B provided instant help and was a skillful surgeon – all went well. Another friend of ours told us that several groomers had tried and failed to clip her Shih Tzu’s nails due to his crazed behavior and his painfully long nails were now impacting his gait – Dr. B and her team accomplished this taking 45 slow and gentle minutes and only charging $16} All of her office staff are friendly and always helpful – happy to meet and greet your pets too. It should also be noted that the practice is bright and clean and modern – even the grounds are kept immaculately and are free of any “messes”! Animal Hospital of Sullivan County is open most days until 5 or 6 pm and offers on-call emergency services 7 days a week from 7:30am to 9pm. They also board pets and maintain the only local crematorium if such services are ever needed. (Dr. B had been most kind and beyond supportive when we were faced with the illness and eventual loss of our beloved dog after 18 years of being a most important member of our family.) We cannot recommend Dr. B more highly and we thank her for her service and care.
