Preventative Care: Preventative Lab Work for Adult and Senior Dogs

Preventative care is one of the most important steps we can take for our own health, for the health of our family members and for the well-being of our pets. The basis of preventative care is an annual or twice-annual wellness exam. Regular screenings at the Animal Hospital of Sullivan County are the best defense against many conditions and diseases.

Adult dogs and senior dogs are more prone to disease than younger animals. This makes regular pet health exams and vet visits even more important and essential to their ongoing well-being. When a health issue is detected early, it is far more treatable than if it has progressed and advanced.

Our Ferndale Veterinarian Offers Both Routine and Advanced Veterinary Care

Different considerations and testing will be required at different phases of a pet’s life. There are numerous aspects of pet wellness to consider and address throughout a pet’s lifespan. In addition to regular wellness exams from our Ferndale NY veterinarian, specific considerations will include:

  • Vaccinations
  • Routine blood work
  • Lab work
  • Flea & tick prevention
  • Parasite screening
  • Nutritional considerations
  • Pet dental care
  • Behavioral counseling
  • Allergy management
  • Pet microchipping

Preventative care through regular vet wellness exams and addressing the considerations above is essential to keeping your adult dog/cat or senior dog/cat healthy well into their golden years. Later in life, your dog/cat may benefit from:

  • Arthritis screening
  • Joint pain management
  • Eye exams and treatment
  • Screening for disease and chronic conditions
  • Illness management
  • General pain management

Again, an annual wellness exam should be a minimum for your pet. Older pets or those prone to illness may require more frequent visits. The Animal Hospital of Sullivan County is here to assist you in bringing your pet the very best quality of life possible at all phases in their development. Being aware of the changing needs of pets as they age is important.

Dr. Barbara Bodolosky is a very talented and professional veterinarian and we chose her to be our vet for our new rescue pup, Sweetie. We are lifelong residents of Sullivan County and have had many vets treating our pets over the years. We picked Dr. B because we had read many glowing and thankful reviews on various websites and noted that her practice is listed as #2 in the Top Ten Vets in Sullivan County. We were instantly drawn to her warm, calm, caring and practice approach to animal care which is also evident in her interaction with us on each visit. Dr. B is willing to spend lots of time with us as we learn about our newest companion and discuss the best care and training for our wonderful, Sweetie – no question is too small. She has been practicing in Sullivan County since 2001 and caring for animals since 1993 after leaving the military. {Note: Recently friends of ours needed to have a very large fishhook removed from their toy Yorkie’s stomach and they report that Dr. B provided instant help and was a skillful surgeon – all went well. Another friend of ours told us that several groomers had tried and failed to clip her Shih Tzu’s nails due to his crazed behavior and his painfully long nails were now impacting his gait – Dr. B and her team accomplished this taking 45 slow and gentle minutes and only charging $16} All of her office staff are friendly and always helpful – happy to meet and greet your pets too. It should also be noted that the practice is bright and clean and modern – even the grounds are kept immaculately and are free of any “messes”! Animal Hospital of Sullivan County is open most days until 5 or 6 pm and offers on-call emergency services 7 days a week from 7:30am to 9pm. They also board pets and maintain the only local crematorium if such services are ever needed. (Dr. B had been most kind and beyond supportive when we were faced with the illness and eventual loss of our beloved dog after 18 years of being a most important member of our family.) We cannot recommend Dr. B more highly and we thank her for her service and care.
