Pet Allergies Treatment at Animal Hospital of Sullivan County in Ferndale, NY

Spring flowers and summer foliage may look enticing, but as an allergy sufferer can tell you, they can also pack a wallop. But allergies are a problem for pets as well as humans, with potential allergens ranging from chemicals to foods. If your pet is suffering from a rash, compulsive itching, or other intrusive allergy symptoms, bring him to our Ferndale veterinarians at Animal Hospital of Sullivan County, for their necessary diagnosis and treatment.

From Flowers to Foods: The Wide World of Allergies

When your pet displays an allergy, their body is overreacting to a stimulus that would normally be ignored as harmless. Allergens trigger the immune system to pump out substances such as histamine in an attempt to neutralize the "danger." Unfortunately, this well-intentioned response only makes your pet miserable.

Some allergies are triggered by contact with specific flowers, leaves, or molds, while others stem from airborne pollutants or chemicals. Fleas and ticks cause itching when their bites trigger allergic reactions. Even the ingredients in certain pet foods can cause allergies to act up.

Signs That Your Pet Has Allergies

An allergic reaction can cause diarrhea, vomiting, respiratory symptoms (runny nose, sneezing), and red, itchy lesions on the skin (allergic dermatitis). In the worst-case scenario, your pet may experience a frightening condition called anaphylactic shock. Symptoms may include irregular heartbeat, collapse, and life-threatening breathing problems due to swelling of the airway. Always treat this condition as a veterinary emergency!

Our Veterinarian Can Resolve Your Pet's Itching, Rash, and Other Symptoms

While our veterinarian can provide immediate treatment to relieve acute allergy symptoms, the long-term goal is to discover the root cause of the allergy so we can try to eliminate it from your pet's everyday life. Our veterinarian does this by administering serum allergy tests (analysis based on blood test results). We can also eliminate one ingredient at a time from your pet's diet to pinpoint a food allergy. Once we understand which allergen we're fighting, we can help your pet through:

  • Flea/tick prevention
  • Anti-fungal drugs
  • Hypoallergenic diets
  • anti-inflammatory agents
  • Antihistamines
  • Environmental recommendations
  • Desensitization with allergy vaccines specific for your pet

Testimonial

Dr. Barbara Bodolosky is a very talented and professional veterinarian and we chose her to be our vet for our new rescue pup, Sweetie. We are lifelong residents of Sullivan County and have had many vets treating our pets over the years. We picked Dr. B because we had read many glowing and thankful reviews on various websites and noted that her practice is listed as #2 in the Top Ten Vets in Sullivan County. We were instantly drawn to her warm, calm, caring and practice approach to animal care which is also evident in her interaction with us on each visit. Dr. B is willing to spend lots of time with us as we learn about our newest companion and discuss the best care and training for our wonderful, Sweetie – no question is too small. She has been practicing in Sullivan County since 2001 and caring for animals since 1993 after leaving the military. {Note: Recently friends of ours needed to have a very large fishhook removed from their toy Yorkie’s stomach and they report that Dr. B provided instant help and was a skillful surgeon – all went well. Another friend of ours told us that several groomers had tried and failed to clip her Shih Tzu’s nails due to his crazed behavior and his painfully long nails were now impacting his gait – Dr. B and her team accomplished this taking 45 slow and gentle minutes and only charging $16} All of her office staff are friendly and always helpful – happy to meet and greet your pets too. It should also be noted that the practice is bright and clean and modern – even the grounds are kept immaculately and are free of any “messes”! Animal Hospital of Sullivan County is open most days until 5 or 6 pm and offers on-call emergency services 7 days a week from 7:30am to 9pm. They also board pets and maintain the only local crematorium if such services are ever needed. (Dr. B had been most kind and beyond supportive when we were faced with the illness and eventual loss of our beloved dog after 18 years of being a most important member of our family.) We cannot recommend Dr. B more highly and we thank her for her service and care.
